Teeth and Shoes

Your Personal Appearance and Your Business

When I was a young girl, looking for beaux, I was told to pay attention to the condition of a man’s teeth and shoes. It sounds funny, I know, but the basic message is still valid. We all judge one another based on personal appearances, and how you present yourself can and will affect your success.

Why teeth and shoes? Because both of these are indications of how well you care for yourself. The implication is that if you don’t take good care of yourself, you won’t take care of my needs as your customer/client.

Research has shown that attractive people are treated with more respect and are often more successful. While not all of us are born natural beauties, good grooming is essential to being attractive. Dress codes may have become more relaxed in recent years, but that is no excuse to neglect personal care.

An honest smile is a winning attribute. Poorly maintained teeth can make one reluctant to laugh and smile openly, and one may even develop a habit of using a hand to hide a bad mouth. Just think what this communicates to your business prospects! Also, problems with the teeth and gums can adversely affect your health; and I hope that I don’t even need to tell you about your breath. So please, take good care of your smile; it is an important asset to your business.

Shoes and dress in general also tell a tale about you. All of us may not be able to buy bespoke suits or designer clothes, but there are many outlets and other options for buying good, classic pieces that will stay current. (Your business wardrobe is generally not a good place to be trendy!) Shoes especially will show how professional you are. Once again, buy good shoes, and keep them well maintained. Just think about how you might judge a woman if her heels are clicking on the floor (like a chihuahua’s nails) because she needs new heel tips! On a practical note, if your feet are hurting, you are not at your best. If you want to be able to convince your clients that you will go “the extra mile” for them, wear shoes that will allow you to go the distance!

One last and very important item: hair and skin. Once again, we all must do our best with what we inherited, but being well groomed makes an average looking person much more appealing. Keep your hair styled and neat. Regular facials, with extractions, are a must not just for women, but men as well. Be sure that your appearance is not a distraction, but an attraction, that complements your presentation. A good appearance is good health, and good business.
